I have been fortunate to have been given an unusual gift: contentment where I am! I don’t spend a lot of time wishing I was somewhere else.
Yes, I have longed to enjoy relationship again with those removed by distance from me, but that is true of all the communities I am privileged to belong to. I am not sure I can choose one place over another so when I saw this poem on a notice board in a country store recently it made me think…..
“God gave to man all earth to love
But since our hearts are small
He gave to each, one place to be
Beloved over all”
If here is “a landscape of my heart” it is Africa’s. The glorious dust, the incredible sunsets, the vastness of the uninhabited plains…
Our eldest children were born in Canada and I remember wondering if that craggy, coniferous landscape would make their hearts sing as Africa does mine…. In the end we didn’t stay long enough….
Perhaps instead, their hearts will stir when they catch sight of the pure translucence of the aquamarine Caribbean Sea…. although I know their hearts too have been captured by Africa….
It’s a fascinating concept “the landscape of our hearts” and one I mull over as I travel….
Nonetheless I am also deeply aware that all of this is just a calling in my heart to something more, the Glory of the Eternal!
